In 1996, the American Cancer Society approached Greater Gallatin United Way about the lack of access to mammograms and cancer screenings by uninsured or underinsured women in this region of Montana. The Mammogram Project was developed to provide funding for these women. Startup funds for the program were provided by Greater Gallatin United Way in order to make screening mammograms available. After the first year, the American Cancer Society resigned from the project. Greater Gallatin United Way sought a partnership with Bozeman Health. The partnership expanded in 2009 with Advanced Medical Imaging joining as a result of the institution of digital mammograms. The collaboration continues with Bozeman Heath taking the lead role in monitoring expenses, managing applications, and overseeing the program. The goal of the Mammogram Project is to make this lifesaving detection procedure available to all women. Funding is available for screening mammograms for un/under-insured women.
